Relationships are built on trust, and the therapeutic relationship is no different. It’s important you feel heard and understood for therapy to be successful. Our first few sessions will give you the opportunity to see how I work and whether you feel comfortable working with me. I will listen and ask questions to get to know your specific symptoms, life circumstances, strengths, and goals. This information will help me select and tailor treatment specifically to your needs. If you think we’re not a good fit, that’s OK too. We can identify what traits you need in a therapist so that I can coach you in finding the right therapist for you.

Remember, it’s all about taking action and that’s enough to start foraging a new path in your life.

My approach

I’m engaged, curious, compassionate, and humorous. I’ve been described as warm and practical with a calming presence. Most times, I sit back and bear witness to what’s unfolding in front of me. I will meet you with genuine authenticity to help you show up as your real self. I go at your pace, gently yet firmly. We will explore how your past experiences have shaped who you are and how you relate to others. There is no right or wrong way to be in therapy as long as you show up as yourself. I can help you unravel new insights and coach you where you would like to be.

“The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.”

-Carl Rogers

What Can I Expect?

Therapy can be an educational, goal-directed, and interactive experience. While there are many benefits from receiving therapy, particular outcomes cannot be guaranteed. Therapy often leads to improved coping skills, solutions to specific problems, and better interpersonal relationships. However, discussing unpleasant events, feelings or thoughts may cause discomfort. Growth may come easy at times and slow at other times. There are no guarantees of positive or intended results, or knowing what you will experience, as the therapeutic process is unique to each person.

Below is a description of therapy modalities I utilize to help you get an idea of what treatment might look like for you.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT): This therapy teaches mindfulness and acceptance skills for responding to uncontrollable experiences. It is less concerned with eliminating thoughts, emotions and sensations, and more concerned with cultivating psychological flexibility in hopes of changing behaviors that can help the client meet his/her/their goals in the long term.

Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT): This therapy emphasizes the importance in applying compassion for yourself, loved ones, and strangers so you can live a healthy and happy life.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): This therapy is proven to be effective for a range of problems, including depression, anxiety disorders, alcohol and drug use problems, marital problems, eating disorders, and severe mental illness. It teaches clients to identify the connection between one’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in order to have a better understanding of their behavior and the motivation of others. Problem solving skills are taught to cope with difficult situations and exposure therapy is used to change behavioral patterns. The goal is to have clients learn skills to become their own therapist so that you’re no longer stuck in your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors – finding new ways to solve and/or cope with problems.

Mindfulness Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (MBCBT): This therapy was developed as a third wave of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy aimed to prevent recurring episodes of depression and is helpful for treating anxiety disorders and addictions. It is a modified form of cognitive therapy that incorporates mindfulness practices, such as meditation and breathing exercises. The aim of this therapy is to teach clients how to break away from negative thought patterns that can cause a downward spiral into depression or stop anxiety or panic from building up over time.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT): This therapy provides clients with new skills to manage painful emotions and decrease conflicts in relationships. It focuses on (1) mindfulness skills - to accept and be present in the current moment, (2) distress tolerance skills - increasing tolerance of negative emotions rather than escaping from it, (3) emotion regulation skills - strategies to manage and change intense emotions causing problems in a person’s life, (4) interpersonal effectiveness skills - allowing a person to communicate with others in a way that is assertive, maintains self-respect, and strengthens relationships.

Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT): This therapy focuses on the idea that your personal relationships are at the center of psychological problems. Feelings of depression may occur in the following areas: interpersonal deficits, unresolved grief, role transitions, like perinatal depression, retirement, divorce, etc., and interpersonal disputes. This therapy utilizes CBT techniques but only as they apply to interpersonal relationships. It is aimed to change relationship patterns rather than the associated depressive symptoms, as well as the relationship difficulties that exacerbate these symptoms.

Exposure Therapy: Elements of CBT are utilized in this type of therapy utilizing Imaginal (imagination) and In-vivo (in real life) exercises to participate in to test out your fears instead of avoiding them. This can be helpful with many anxiety disorders including but not limited to generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, panic disorder, health-illness anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive-disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT): is a specific type of cognitive behavioral therapy effective in reducing symptoms of PTSD that have developed after experiencing a variety of traumatic events including child abuse, combat, rape, and natural disasters, and complicated grief/traumatic bereavement. It helps clients learn how to identify, challenge, and modify unhelpful beliefs related to the trauma. In doing so, the client creates a new understanding and narrative of the event so that it reduces its ongoing negative effects on his/her/their current life.
